Healthcare and higher education are the region's biggest employers, and both are growing. Bioscience is right behind them.
Yale is New Haven's largest employer, and the region has eight colleges, universities, community colleges and trade schools, including two law schools and two medical schools. That means jobs in teaching and research, and just as many in administration, IT, finance and operations.
Yale New Haven Hospital is the city's second-largest employer, and Yale New Haven Health employs more than 12,000 people in the region. There's work for clinicians, researchers and everyone who keeps a hospital system running.
More than 70 bioscience companies work here in pharmaceuticals, diagnostics, cancer care, therapeutics, health technology and medical devices. Greater New Haven is the second-largest bioscience hub in New England.
Connecticut builds helicopters and submarines, and both are within reach of New Haven. Sikorsky makes Black Hawk helicopters in Stratford and employs more than 7,000 people in the state, and Electric Boat, which builds submarines in Groton, plans to hire 8,000 people this year. These companies hire engineers, machinists, skilled trades, IT and program managers.
New Haven sits in the middle of Connecticut, with commutable distances by car or train to both Hartford and Stamford.
